FAQ’s

Can I buy a setting without buying a gemstone?

We do not sell or create settings unless the customer is also purchasing a centre stone. Our settings are made-to-order with each one designed for a centre gem with unique characteristics to ensure the quality of the finished piece. For this reason, we do not provide stand-alone settings or semi mounts.

How can I find a diamond that is not in SJ Gems’ Inventory?

Our inventory is constantly updated and we may have additional inventory of diamonds not listed on our website. Please contact us so we can help you find a diamond that is perfect for you.

Is my diamond laser inscribed?

Diamonds currently graded by GIA and IGI are laser inscribed on the girdle with an identification number. Laser inscriptions provide peace of mind when making a diamond purchase since they are an easy way to verify to the certificate.

Are SJ Gems lab diamonds certified?

Yes. We only sell lab diamonds that are certified by independent diamond grading labs and have an inscription that matches the number on the laboratory certificate.

What if I want a centre stone shape that is not offered for that setting?

Many of our settings can be easily modified to accommodate a different centre stone shape than what is offered online. Please contact us to discuss all of your modification options.

Can a small change be made to jewellery I like on SJ Gems?

Many of our pieces are made to order, which makes us able to customize our standard items to fit your personal preferences. For example, we can modify the finish, the precious metal, and the gems that we set. Contact us to discuss all of your modification options.

Are all of SJ Gems’ white gold rings rhodium-plated?

Yes, all of our white gold pieces are rhodium-plated to give them a brilliant, white shine. If you prefer the softer, warm tones of white gold that has not been plated, please contact us so that we can make that modification when you place your order.

How long will it take to get my order?

Engagement Rings

We make every ring to order to ensure the highest quality. Manufacture of your ring typically takes 3 weeks. The exact completion date is always hard to determine exactly. Please know that we endeavour to get your ring completed as soon as possible.

Diamonds/LAB’s

In order to offer you the best prices, we buy and import on a weekly basis. The process is quite fast and usually ships out to you in 8 to 12 working days.

What type of warranty do I receive?

SJ Gems offer a Lifetime Manufacturing Warranty on all our products.

What payment methods do you accept?

At SJ Gems, we accept payments via direct EFT or card. If you are looking for an extended payment plan, we also offer interest-free finance via Payflex.

The fit of my ring is not quite right, can I resize it?

Absolutely! We offer One Free Resize for engagement and wedding rings to use within the first 30 days of your ring’s completion (subject to eligible design style/metal type). You will be responsible for shipping costs.

Can you repair delicate designs that have been damaged?

We can attempt to repair delicate designs, but if the damage is due to the inherent risks of the design (like snagging or bending), it is not covered under the warranty.

The metal on my ring has become discoloured. Is that a defect?

Discoloration or tarnishing of metals due to exposure to air, moisture, or chemicals is not considered a manufacturing defect and is not covered by the warranty. Regular cleaning and maintenance can help prevent this.

What happens if I lose a gemstone

Loss of a centre stone is not covered under the warranty. We recommend you make sure your jewellery is properly insured for protection against loss. Accent stones or side diamonds are covered by our warranty for up to 6 moths from date of purchase. You will be responsible for the shipping costs.

My prongs have bent. Is this under warranty?

Bent prongs resulting from accidental damage are not covered under the warranty. However, prongs that bend immediately after purchase due to a manufacturing defect are covered. SJ Gems reserve the right to determine the cause of damage/fault of the piece.

What should I do if a stone becomes loose in its setting?

If the gemstone was improperly set during manufacturing, this would be covered under the warranty. However, if the prongs wear down over time due to regular use, the repair is not covered under the warranty and would be considered normal wear and tear.

What happens if I miss my delivery?

If a missed delivery occurs, the parcel will be sent back to the shipping warehouse. A second delivery attempt will be made. If the parcel remains undelivered after the second attempt, it will be returned to SJ Gems and our standard shipping fee will apply for a new delivery.

Are there any shipping costs involved?

Free Shipping: Applies to all online orders and returns within 7 days. Excluding coloured gemstones or special orders. Other Shipping Options: For services such as repairs and plating, a shipping fee of R200 one way will be applied. R400 for collection and return.
